Universal Warriors (Chapter 6, Page 37)

“I love you too” she replied and then hung up. She sunk into the couch and wept.
Larry placed the phone on the table he was sitting at in the coffee shop. He heard the pain in Mackenzie’s voice and that pain hurt his very core. He knew she missed him and he understood it more than anyone because he felt exactly the same way. If he could he would get on a plane immediately and go and see her. Sadly things were not that simple; as much as he wanted to see her there were other more pressing matters at hand. Matters of life and death.
She was the most important thing in his life and that would never change but when he signed up for his job he had taken an oath and he was the kind of guy who kept his word. Right now what he needed to do was more important than seeing her, it was urgent; people’s lives depended on it. As much as it hurt her, he knew she understood. That was the one thing he could always count on, the fact that she understood.
He reached out and grabbed the paper cup and sipped his contents. He felt the hot freshly brewed coffee slide down his throat. He thought about what he was about to do. He remembered the instructions from home base.
“Get in, retrieve the package and get out. Simple and clean”
But Larry knew things did not always go according to plan. But for his sake, he hoped this would be a quick job. He drained down the rest of his coffee, placed the amount of money he owed on the table and left the coffee shop, determined to get this over with.
