“Of course I am; why do you ask?” Sheryl asked wondering why her father sounded so distressed.
“Someone broke into the house yesterday” he explained. Sheryl was silent; she couldn’t believe this was happening again and so soon.
“Baby bear are you still there?”
“Yes papa”
“It’s going to be alright” he tried to comfort her.
“Don’t worry about me, I’ll be careful” she reassured him.
“Just watch out” he warned.
“Yes, papa”
“Goodnight baby bear” he said before hanging up. Sheryl put her phone on the bedside table and pulled her sheets closer to her chest. She felt angry and scared at the same time. She was just beginning to settle down here and she actually liked the place and the friends she was making and this happens.
“Why? why? why?” She gritted her teeth in anger as the tears streamed down her face.
“Why can’t I be normal?” she questioned.
She was so tired of this, always watching her back, always being suspicious of those around her. She didn’t want to run anymore but she wasn’t sure she could fight either. She felt alone, sucked in by this cruel world. Her biological parents came to mind. It was their fault; they were to blame for all these things going on in her life. She held on to her pillow and struggled to get to sleep. Maybe at least in her sleep she could be completely free. It took her a while but she was finally able to get to sleep.
She had been sleep for two hours when she was suddenly awakened by the sound of her window opening. She turned her gaze to the window and she felt her whole body turn to stone when she saw a dark figure step into the room. Her mind was racing, she wasn’t sure what to, whether to lay there and pretend she was asleep or make a run for it. She wanted to run but it was too late, the figure was now standing over her. He stood there for a few moments as if trying to contemplate his next move. Sheryl lay completely still; hoping he would just go away but her gut feeling told her he wasn’t leaving until he achieved his purpose.
