CHAPTER 1
Sheryl sighed as she closed the zip on her big red travelling suitcase. She wondered what her new school would be like, not that they were any different. Every school she had been to so far had had the same social divisions and hierarchy, the same stupid and immature drama, the same boring teachers. It really was as they said, different location same drama. She thought about what life would have been like if she were normal, if she could just stay in one place long enough to make friends and go out and have fun. You know all the normal stuff that her peers did. But sadly that was not the case, instead she was always watching her back, keeping her distance, analyzing every move she made in case there was someone lurking in the shadows waiting for the perfect opportunity to get rid of her. She couldn’t help but feel bitter and have a little resentment for her real parents; it was because of them that she had to live like this. The worst part was she didn’t even know them; the only parents she had ever known were her guardians.
There wasn’t any doubt that she was grateful to them for taking care of her and treating her as their own, as they were never able to conceive their own child. But there was still that emptiness, that void that she could never comprehend nor fill. Her foster parents had told her that her parents had only left her in their care because they felt it was her best shot at a normal life.
“Best shot for whom?” She wondered.
