seldom by her actual name, except for those times when she was in big trouble of course.
“Am okay papa” she replied as she reached over to him and gave him a warm hug.
Pierce hugged his daughter back with great affection, almost as if he were hugging her for the last time. She clung on to him, like the way a small koala bear clings to its mother.
“I know this is your first boarding experience but you are going to be brave” he told her softly but firmly.
“Yes papa” she said as she nodded into his chest.
“We checked this school out and it’s completely safe, so there aren’t going to be any more transfers. It’s stability from now on” he told her with confidence.
“Okay” she said and pulled away from his chest and smiled sweetly at him before giving him a kiss on the cheek.
Pierce tried not to show too much emotion. He knew things were going to be quiet around the house without her but then again she was growing up, and if he did not let go now, he may never will.
“Come on, mum is waiting outside” he said as he took the suitcase from her and carried it outside to the driveway.
When they got there her foster mum Gill was already sitting in the car waiting. Pierce put the case in the boot along with Sheryl’s other belongings and then walked round to the door of the driving seat, got in and ignited the engine.
